Poly (vinylidene chloride), a polymer of vinylidene chloride. The English abbreviation PVDC. Glass transition temperature -17 ℃, melting temperature 198-205 ℃, crystal density 1.96 g/cm3. It has characteristics such as flame resistance, corrosion resistance, and good airtightness. Due to its strong polarity, it is insoluble in general solvents at room temperature. The disadvantage is poor light and thermal stability, and difficult processing. Polyvinylidene chloride can be made into sheets, pipes, molded parts, films, and fibers. Its fiber is called vinylidene chloride fiber in China, and the American product name Saran (including copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride or acrylonitrile). In order to overcome the disadvantages of poor solubility and processing difficulties, vinylidene chloride is usually copolymerized with a small amount (15% to 20%) of monomers such as vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, and acrylate to obtain binary or ternary copolymers. Vinylidene chloride copolymers are also used as coatings, adhesives, etc. Due to its high sensitivity to ultraviolet, electron beam, and other radiation, and its decomposition to produce a small amount of hydrogen chloride, it is also used as an acid sensitive recording material. PVDC is a copolymer mainly composed of vinylidene chloride. Due to the difficulty in processing and application of pure PVDC, homopolymers have been unable to be industrialized. In the 1930s, DOW Chemical in the United States successfully developed VDC-VC copolymers and named them "SARAN". In the 1980s, the VDC-MA series was also launched.
