This standard specifies the terms, principles, reagents, instruments and equipment, sample preparation, operating steps, result representation, and precision requirements for the determination of sterol dienes, especially stigmasteres, in vegetable oil by high-performance liquid chromatography. Sterol diene is formed by dehydration of sterol substances during the bleaching treatment of oils and fats, as well as during water vapor washing and deodorization processes. This method is also applicable to the screening method for determining the presence of refined vegetable oil in unrefined oils such as virgin olive oil. Note:; ISO 15788-1 is the benchmark method for the determination of stigmasteres in vegetable oils, and this method can be used as a rapid screening method. Its precision (see Appendix A) can be verified using the gas-liquid harmonic method specified in ISO 15788-1.
