Methyl group, with the chemical formula - CH Å (one horizontal represents one single electron), abbreviated as - Me, is composed of carbon and hydrogen elements. It is the electrically neutral monovalent group left in a methane molecule after removing one hydrogen atom. Methyl, as a chemical group, often appears in various organic compounds and is the most common group that can bind to specific parts of DNA. The process of methyl binding to DNA is called methylation, while the process of detachment from the compound is called demethylation. Due to the enzymatic reduction of N5 and N10-methylenetetrahydrofolate, N5-methyltetrahydrofolate is generated. The methyl group is transferred from N5-methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine by a cobalt amidase, resulting in the formation of methionine. Methionine is converted into S-adenosylmethionine by the action of ATP, which is used as a methyl donor to generate various methyl compounds. Betaine, as an oxidized form of choline, also acts as a methyl donor. Methyl transfer reaction is not only related to the generation of substances such as choline, creatine, and adrenaline containing methyl groups, but also to detoxification, changes in phospholipids, methylation of nucleic acids and proteins, and is also physiologically important.
