Avocado Testing
1. Test items
Maturity test:
Hardness: Use a professional hardness tester to measure the hardness of the avocado skin. If it is too hard, it means it is not ripe and the taste is not good; if it is too soft, it may be over-ripe and the flesh is easy to oxidize and deteriorate.
Peel color: Observe the color change of the avocado skin from yellow-green to dark brown. There are slight differences in color when different varieties mature. Generally, darker color means higher maturity.
Pulp dry matter content: The dry matter ratio of the pulp is determined by the drying method. The dry matter content of mature avocado is relatively stable. This indicator can assist in judging maturity and ensure that the fruit flavor is optimal.
Quality inspection:
Appearance quality: Check whether the shape of the fruit is regular, whether there are deformities, traces of pests and diseases, mechanical damage, etc., to ensure that the appearance of the avocado is complete and beautiful, and meets the market circulation standards.
Pulp quality: Check whether the flesh color is bright yellow-green, whether the texture is soft and delicate and has no fibrosis. High-quality flesh can bring a better eating experience.
Safety testing:
Pesticide residues: Use advanced technologies such as gas chromatography and liquid chromatography to detect pesticide residues on the surface and in the flesh of avocados to ensure that they meet national food safety standards and allow consumers to eat with confidence.
Heavy metal content: Quantitative analysis of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium to prevent soil pollution and other factors from causing excessive heavy metals in avocados and endangering human health.
2. Testing methods
Maturity determination: In addition to the above-mentioned hardness tester and visual observation, near-infrared spectroscopy technology can also be used to quickly and non-destructively judge maturity based on the absorption characteristics of avocado fruits to light of specific wavelengths. This method is efficient and does not damage the sample.
Quality testing: Appearance inspection relies on manual experience and comparison with standard spectra. The flesh quality inspection uses a texture analyzer to measure the mechanical properties of the flesh such as elasticity and viscosity. At the same time, combined with sensory evaluation, professional tasters evaluate the taste and flavor.
Safety testing: Pesticide residues and heavy metal testing require professional laboratories. After pre-treatment of avocado samples, they are analyzed on the machine and accurate data is obtained in strict accordance with the operating procedures.
3. Testing standards
Internationally, there are universal avocado quality grading standards. Domestically, according to the "National Food Safety Standard Fresh Fruits and Vegetables" and other regulations, detailed specifications are made from aspects such as fruit size, maturity grading, pesticide residue limits, and heavy metal limits to ensure uniform testing standards and stable product quality.
4. Significance of testing
For growers, testing guides reasonable picking and sales timing, optimizes planting management; for distributors, it ensures the quality of incoming goods and reduces business risks; for consumers, eating strictly tested avocados can not only enjoy delicious nutrition, but also have no health worries, promoting the healthy development of the avocado industry.
